PANCHKULA, MAY 18: In a daring incident a woman in her late fifties was duped of her jewellery worth Rs 40,000 by a couple in broad daylight today. The incident took place in Sector 16, a few yards away from her residence, House no. 615. She was coming back from a satsang, and had alighted from a bus. As she was neared her house, a man in his mid forties enquired about the location of the Radhaswami Bhawan in Sector 17 from her, and then left.Just then a woman in mid-thirties approached her and began praising the man who had just left. The woman described him as a well-known "Sadhu". Soon the man returned and even told Kaushalya about the number of her family members. During the course of the conversation she was "hypnotised" and told to remove her jewellery and wrap it in a handkerchief provided by the couple.
Talking to Newsline Kaushalya said that at this moment she felt giddy for a second; then the man returned her the handkerchief and told her to turn her back and walk 10 steps. She had just walked a few steps when suddenly suspicious she turned back. To her shock she saw the couple fleeing in a white Maruti car. The handkerchief returned to her contained 2 iron bangles.
Espying a Police PCR van few minutes later, she informed them of the incident. However by that time the car was out of sight, so the police transmitted a wireless message at all outlets.
According to the victim she lost a pair of gold ear-rings, four gold bangles, two gold rings, and a gold chain.
According to her description the man was dark, about 5' 5'' tall with protruding teeth, and was wearing a blue striped shirt and black trousers, while the woman was wearing light blue salwar kameez and white dupatta and had an oval face. At the time of the incident 3 police parties were on duty in the area. A special cell has been formed to nab the culprits, this being the seventh incident in the past two months. The cell will be headed by Sub-Inspector Jagdish of the CIA staff, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Pradeep Kumar incharge of the Sector 16 will comb the area, while about 6-7 police personnel have been deployed in plain clothes. The Superintendent of Police, Alok Mittal, has issued a computerised sketch of the culprit on the basis of the information provided by the victim. The police had also pasted sketches of the couple when a similar incident occurred last month in the same sector at strategic points like banks, STD booths and government offices.
