Food, Supplies Inspector held
ROOPNAGAR: A Grade-I Inspector of Food and Civil Supplies Department was held for accepting a gratification from a ration depot holder at Mohali near here. DSP Malwinder Singh Sidhu, Vigilance, posted here said that Inspector Mohan Lal Mahajan was arrested red-handed while accepting Rs 1,000 as ``illegal gratification'' from Laxmi Chand Sanin, a depot holder at Phase-X of Mohali, to settle a complaint of irregularities against him. Sidhu added that Mahajan was arrested at Phase IX of the township, where he was camping for issuance of new ration cards to the residents. An FIR was registered against Mahajan who had initially asked Saini to pay him Rs 3,000 to settle the matter. However, the deal was later struck at Rs 1,000.

`Only Sikhs should act in Singh Soormey'
ROOPNAGAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member from S.A.S. Nagar Hardeep Singh, who is also president of theatre group Sunheri Virsa, today offered to provide Sikh actors to organisers of controversial play Singh Soormey to settle the row over enactment of roles of Sikh historical figures by those with shorn hair. Hardeep Singh said it was objectionable on the part of the organisers to let non-Sikhs perform the role of Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtab Singh by sporting false beards.

HSEB workers to intensify stir
AMBALA: The HSEB Workers' Union, affiliated to the Haryana Karamchari Mahasangh, has decided to intensify its agitation against what it called the anti-employee and dictatorial policy of the Bansi Lal government. A decision to this effect was taken at the two-day state-level convention, which concluded here yesterday. A resolution adopted on the occasion appealed to political parties to clarify their stand regarding employees. Another resolution demanded that the four Karamchari Mahasangh leaders, 700 employees and 34 nurses should be re-instated and cases framed against employees under ESMA should be withdrawn. It also demanded withdrawal of transfer orders of Sangh general secretary M.L. Sehgal.

`Cancel Prasanni Devi's appointment'
AMBALA: Congressmen loyal to former chief minister Bhajan Lal have opposed the appointment of former Haryana minister Prasanni Devi as an observer for Ambala district by HPCC president Bhupinder Singh Hooda. This section of the party has also been opposing the appointment of Brij Anand as president of DCC (Urban), Ambala, without any election. Consequently, the dissidents formed a parallel DCC. Former state organising secretary Om Prakash Malik, former DCC presidents A.L. Kalra and Puran Chand Jaiswal and Darshan Budhiraja and Gulshan Chhabra have urged the high command to cancel Prasanni Devi's appointment.

Sahit Sabha to honour Barnala
PATIALA: Punjabi Sahit Sabha, Barnala, in collaboration with North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, and State Bank of Patiala, Barnala branch is organising a poetic symposium in June to celebrate the tercentenary of the Khalsa. The symposium will be held at the Library Hall, Lal Bahradur Shastri Arya Mahila College, Barnala, under the presidentship of Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Surjit Singh Barnala. Eminent Punjabi poets are expected to participate. On this auspicious occasion, Punjabi Sahit Sabha, Barnala, will honour Surjit Singh Barnala, a patron and pioneer member of the Sabha.

Accounting Association opens branch
PATIALA: Indian Accounting Association has opened its Patiala branch. According to Professor B. S. Bhatia, Dean, Academic Affairs, and president of the association, the main objective of the association is to promote accounting research, accounting education and training activities in this area. According to G.S. Batra, general secretary of the association, opening of such a chapter will lead to more interface between accounting education, industry and those in the accounting field. Prof. A.S. Chawla, Dr J.S.Pasricha, Dr Mahesh Paramjit Kumar, Anil Arora, Mahesh Joshi and Gaganjot Singh were appointed executive committee members.

PSEB employee's death condoled
PATIALA: Punjab State Electricity Board Officers'(general services) Association in emergent meeting of its executive held here condoled the sudden demise of Kaka Singh, superintendent, and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.
