Kids call the shots

Rasika Dhavse
When these children take the stage, there is no trace of the inexperience and lack of sophistication associated with young age. Under the arclights, their talent reigns supreme, as Puneites have seen at a previous performance of Little Wonders - a unique children's orchestra promoted by noted music director Kalyanji. Coming to town again, the group performs at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch on May 19, in aid of SAMPARC (Social Action for Manpower Creation), an NGO working for destitute children.

Having been actively associated with the world of music for almost 50 years, Kalyanji has been involved with this group for about five years now. ``All along whenever we would have our live Kalyanji-Anandji nights, the maximum response would be for any child artiste who would perform. That was how the idea took root to do something for children. Already we have done about 250 live shows with the children,'' says this veteran of Indian film music.

Having worked with legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Kalyanji is full of praise for the children too. ``They are very talented and polished. They have a good grasp and pick up real quick,'' he says. And true to his words, the children in the troupe (the youngest being just three and a half) have all that it takes to be good playback singers - sweet voice, clear pronunciation, and most importantly, vivid expression. As Kalyanji says, ``The audience should be able to see the song with their ears.'' And indeed, the little wonders are able to do just that.

Having consciously decided to keep away from music direction, he has now directed his energies towards his troupe, ``because it is more rewarding to contribute towards a new generation of singers and musicians.'' And his pupils will evidently not let him down.
