Mohsin urges Pak SC to order govt to produce Sethi

SHAHID AHMED KHAN
ISLAMABAD, May 19:The wife of detained Friday Times editor Najam Sethi, Jugnu Mohsin, has appealed to Pakistan's supreme court to order the Nawaz Sharif government to produce him before the court when hearing resumes in the case tomorrow.

``I hope the court will order his production so that the matter can be dealt with the law because for last so many days, he is being held without charge, without a case and in complete violation of law,'' she said after a meeting with Sethi.

She met Sethi, who was arrested on May 8 for alleged anti-Pakistan remarks during a seminar in New Delhi, after the apex court ordered the government to allow the meeting. Sethi has been under solitary confinement since his arrest.

The Lahore high court had earlier dismissed a habeas corpus petition filed by Sethi's wife, ruling that the case was beyond the competence of the civilian courts. The government has said it will book Sethi under the Army Act.

The hearing of the case, that has sparked off outrage at home andabroad, is to resume in the apex court tomorrow with attorney general Choudhury Muhammad Farooq placing details of Sethi's arrest and his detention before a three-member bench.

The government has accused Sethi, a firebrand, known for his anti-establishment stance, of not only maligning the country but also weakening its position on Kashmir in his speech in New Delhi recently.

``What he said there (in India) was very clear. It is on the record. He was actually maligning Pakistan and presenting a picture of Pakistan that is not only contrary to facts but which in fact, weakens Pakistan's position -- particularly on Kashmir,'' the official news agency APP quoted information minister Mushahid Hussain as saying.

Mohsin has alleged that her husband was being punished because he had given an interview to a BBC team making a film on alleged corruption of Sharif's family and accused the government of starting a smear campaign against him.

The government had earlier released a confidential report by thePakistani high commissioner in New Delhi Ashraf Jahangir Qazi on Sethi's speech in which Qazi said, the people of Pakistan ``need to know about the poisonous sentiments Sethi has been expressing about Pakistan in India.''
