Armed with bail order, Vikas Yadav surrenders

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 19: In a dramatic development in the Jessica Lal murder case, Vikas Yadav alias Vicky, main accomplice of prime suspect Manu Sharma, on Wednesday surrendered before the police armed with an anticipatory bail order from a Manipur court but the police did not arrest him.

Accompanied by a battery of lawyers, Vikas, son of Rajya Sabha member D P Yadav, who has been on the run since the ramp model's killing at Bina Ramani's Tamarind Court bar at south Delhi on April 30, presented himself before Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Amod Kanth at the police headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.

Visibly taken aback by the "surrender", Kanth said, "The (bail) order has not been served on us. We are not sure whether it is correct or not. I have asked the station house officer, Mehrauli, to verify the order itself."

"I am not even sure if this happens to be Vikas Yadav himself," Kanth said, adding, "We are not arresting him right now. We have to examine the authenticity of the order."

Vikas, dressed in a cream-coloured shirt with black trousers, looked cheerful throughout his three hour long stay at the headquarters. He pleaded innocence while accusing the Delhi police of orchestrating a "trial by media" in the case. "I am innocent and I want to cooperate with the police in their investigations," Yadav told PTI shortly after "surrendering" to the police. He went on to allege that he was being framed with a view to damage his father's social standing and prospects in the coming elections.

Denying he was with his "schoolmate" Manu Sharma, at the time of Jessica's murder, Vikas alleged that the prime suspect reached his father's official residence at Balwant Rai Mehta Lane here in an inebriated condition after the incident and requested him to allow him to stay there.

"Since my father had gone to Lucknow, I allowed him to stay. When he told me that he had fired two shots in a restaurant, I advised him to surrender before the police following which he left. Had I known that he had killedsomeone, I would not have allowed him to stay," Vikas said in an unsigned statement circulated to media by his lawyers.

The May 15 order issued by Manipur east, Imphal's Sessions Judge Sudhir Singh, directed the competent arresting authority (Delhi police) to grant bail to Vikas in the event of his arrest in order to enable him to approach the competent court preferably within two months.

The lawyers also submitted an application to Police Commissioner V N Singh seeking police bail for Vikas and assuring that he was ready to assist the probe.

Later, after three hours of waiting and not being arrested, Vikas left the headquarters leaving a message that he would be available for questioning.
