Congressman's kin held for shooting

ROOPNAGAR, MAY 19: The police have arrested the brother of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee member Satwant Singh Gill for allegedly injuring a young man in a firing incident at Giani Zail Singh Nagar here last night.

The accused, Kulwant Singh Gill, had reportedly fired two shots at Vikram Singh (24) with his double-barrel rifle following a minor altercation.

Enquiries revealed that Vikram had accompanied his uncle Jasvir Singh to Kulwant Singh Gill's house following a minor altercation between his uncle and Kulwant Singh. Jasvir Singh had gone to Gill's house to sort out the issue of dispute. However, Gill fired at the two from the roof of his house, injuring Vikram.

The incident prompted a lawyer, N.S. Khanda, to call the police for help. The police reached the spot immediately and sent Vikram to the civil hospital, from where he was referred to PGI, Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, Gill and his wife allegedly detained Jasvir at their house and assaulted him. While Gill's son Vikrampal Singh hit Jasvir Singh with his cricket bat, while Gill tried to hit him Singh with his gun. However, the police team headed by SHO (City) Harjinder Singh, reached in time to rescued Jasvir Singh. While Kulwant Singh has been arrested and his weapon confiscated, his wife Shinderpal Kaur and son Vikrampal Singh Gill are absconding.

Speaking to ENS, Kulwant's brother Satwant Singh Gill, PPCC member, confirmed the incident, adding that Kulwant Singh had been provoked by Jasvir.

An FIR under various sections of the IPC has been registered against Kulwant, his wife and son on the statement of Jasvir Singh's wife, Jaswinder Kaur. The complainant has accused the trio of attempt to murder and wrongful confinement of her husband. According to Jasvir, had the police not reached in time to rescue him, he would have been shot dead by Kulwant Singh Gill. Jasvir said that his nephew, who sustained injured on his shoulder and arm, is being operated upon in the PGI.
