Harijan woman accuses police of illegal confinement

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
ROOPNAGAR, MAY 19: A harijan woman from Mansali village has accused the police of Ghanaui chowki of harassment and illegal confinement on a ``false complaint.''

In a written representation to SSP Jaskaran Singh, Shamsher Kaur of Mansali has accused head constable Gurbax Singh of detaining her at Ghanauli police post on May 10 on a complaint of setting fire to trees at Dangoli panchayat forest. She said that Gurbax Singh had demanded Rs 1,500 to settle the matter and that she was detained for more than three hours at the police post in the absence of women constables.

She alleged that somebody had razed the trees from the panchayat land in Dangoli village. Subsequently, she complained to the Dangoli panchayat.

But the culprit allegedly set the wood on fire to destroy evidence against himself and lodged a complaint accusing Shamsher Kaur of setting the trees on fire. She was summoned to the Ghanauli police post by Gurbax Singh, who detained her for more than three hours without registering a case against her.

Her relatives and District Congress Committee general secretary Jagjit Singh Jagga approached the Vigilance Department, which had her released.

In the absence of SSP Jaskaran Singh, DSP (headquarters) had received the representation. On being contacted, Jaskaran Singh said he would look into the matter.
