GEB shuts down three sub-stations

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 19: The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has shut down three electricity sub-stations in Jamnagar as a precautionary measure. Special control rooms have also been established in the wake of a cyclone threat in Gujarat.

According to highly placed sources, Varvada, Bhatia and Armudha sub-stations near Jamnagar have been shut down from 1 p.m. on Wednesday to prevent any damage to machinery and people in the areas served by them. The Board was compelled to shut these sub-stations due to winds blowing at 70 kilometers an hour, sources said, adding that the supply would restart after normalcy returns.

Teams headed by executive engineers are camping in the cyclone-prone areas. Control rooms have been opened at 18 places in the circle offices all over the State, apart from control rooms in transmission circles at eight places.

According to Board chairman Nalin Bhatt, diesel-generator sets have been kept ready to ensure that essential services like water supply and hospitals are not affected.

The regional store offices will remain open for all 24 hours to ensure availability of equipment if there is a need to restore supply following damage to equipment.

Chief Engineer (Distribution) H B Parikh is camping in Rajkot, Chief Engineer (Rural Electrification) A P Shukla in Surat, Additional Chief Engineer P R Kansara at Bhuj, Additional Chief Engineer (Appellate) H A Shah at Bhavnagar, Additional Chief Engineer D K Dave and Additional Chief Engineer A M Morzaria at Porbandar.
