Panchayat member suspended

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, May 19: Surat district panchayat member and local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Kosamba Kantilal K Parmar has been suspended for six years from the party after he allegedly drove the daughter of his mistress to suicide in Kosamba.

The suspension orders were issued by BJP State president Rajendra Rana after the deceased's brother wrote a letter to the district superintendent of police, alleging that Parmar made advances towards the victim, forcing her to jump before a running train on April 30.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to register a case of abetement of suicide against Parmar. Kamrej circle police inspector K K Tiwari has been asked to investigate the matter before registering a case. Top district police officials said that most probably, a case will be registered in a couple of days.

According to the complaint, the deceased, an FYBA student, committed suicide after being constantly sexually harrased by Parmar in the past few months. After the father of deceased died about six years ago, the accused also forcibly stayed in their house, at Tarsadi near Kosamba, as her mother was allegedly Kantilal's mistress. Kantilal also threatened and pressurised the mother, the complaint added.

Of late, he had shown interest in the daughter and openly asked her for sexual favours in the presence of her family members. He threatened her that he would come over to their house on April 30, which terrified the girl and drove her to kill herself.

The complainant added that he also raised a voice against Parmar after the girl committed suicide, but was threatened with dire consequences by him.

District Superintendent of Police V M Pargi, while talking to Express Newsline on Wednesday, said that he had received a written complaint by Prakash Parmar and had asked Tiwari to verify the facts before registering a case.

``Preliminary investigations show that there is adequate truth in what the complainant has said and a case will be registered,'' Pargi said, adding that the accused will then be arrested.

The complainant had come to the DSP's office three days ago with a few elderly members of the adivasi samaj asking the official to look into the matter. The complaint also listed down a couple more cases where Parmar is said to have established sexual relations with women after intimidating and threatening them.
