Work going on at a snail's pace

HARPREET BAJWA
SAS NAGAR, MAY 19: The construction work of the multipurpose sports complex opposite the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Phase-X in the township is going on at a snail's pace. According to officials of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA), which has undertaken the construction work, the delay is due to inadequate funds.

The proposed cost of the project which is spread over an area of 24 acre, is Rs 36.5 crore. However, the expenditure till now has been over rupees three crores.

The first phase of the construction work, which began in October last, includes boundary wall, parking space and levelling of the grounds, however, is still under construction.

In the second phase, the construction work of play grounds would be taken up. The 400-metre eight-lane sythetic track, tennis and badminton courts are in the second phase of the project.

However, construction of the indoor stadium, which also includes modern swimming pool would be taken up. The multipurpose indoor hall will have facilities for wrestling, judo, basketball, fencing and gymnastics The architect of the project is Arun Lomba, who had also designed PCA Stadium.

According to Col Raminder Singh, Director, Punjab Sports Department, the complex when completed will have modern facilities for the players. ``Indoor facilities will also allow us to hold national and international competitions here,'' informed the director.

Regarding the releasing of more funds, he said that it would be done only after the PUDA gives the utilisation certificate for the money it had received earlier.
