NEW DELHI, MAY 21: The Delhi High Court today asked the police to file a status report on investigations in the Jessica Lal murder case by May 20. It asked the police to specify names of officials who were present at Bina Ramani's `Tamarind Court' restaurant where the model had been shot dead. The order came on a criminal writ filed by the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Morcha (BVM) seeking a CBI probe and alleging that police were unable to freely investigate the restaurant on the day of the murder as high ranking officials had been present. A division bench comprising Justice Anil Dev Singh and Justice Mukul Mudgal, asked the police to file an affidavit giving details about how the restaurant was being run and stating the role of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in connection with the restaurant.
It should also give details about Ramani's passport and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) angle as the Archaeological Survey of India Act prohibits all kind of commercial activities within a specified limitof historical monuments.
The Tamarind Court restaurant near the Qutb Minar complex was being run "illegally" say the police while BVN counsel Mohammed Sajid alleged in court that Ramani was paying Rs 40,000 as protection money to the police every month.
