PUNE, May 21: At an emergency meeting of the Pune Malayalee Federation, the executive committee passed a resolution calling upon the four lakh Malayalees of Pune to reject the introduction of the new train from Pune to Ernakulam, starting from July 4, in its present proposed route. It has warned the railway authorities to be prepared for more agitations including a rail roko,if they do not consider the three routes suggested by the federation. The present route, via Miraj-Hubli-Harihar-Birur-Arisikara-Tumkur-Hosur-Salem-Coimbatore-Palkhed-Th rissur-Ernakulam, deprives train facilities to 40 per cent of the city's Malayalees who belong to North Malabar region, from Kasargode to Palakhed.
In case the three choices they have submitted are not feasible due to operational hazards, they have urged the authorities to consider the earlier `Netravati' route: Pune-Krishnarajpuram-Mangalore-Ernakulam.
The Poona Kerala Muslim Jamat discussed today the problem of the absence of a train to Malabar from Pune due to the removal of one Mangalore bogie from the Kanyakumari Jayanti Express and the diversion of the Netravati to the Konkan route. The Jamat's president Abdul Majeed proposed a resolution condemning the railways for ignoring the Jamat's representations. It was passed unanimously.
