Cyclone weakens over Rajasthan, rains continue

JAIPUR, MAY 23: The Arabian Sea-borne cyclone today weakened over Rajasthan but a severe squall accompanied by dust storm and rains lashed parts of south-west Rajasthan.

The cyclonic storm, which lay centred over Barmer and Jaisalmer districts in the last two days, was subsiding, the Met department said, adding "the surface pressure area has risen helping the cyclone to phase out".

Heavy rains accompanied by thundershowers lashed Jaisalmer, Barmer and Bikaner, it said. Reports of sheep perishing in some villages of Bikaner district were received, besides damage caused to kutcha houses in rural areas. Power and water supply were affected, while telecommunication lines were disrupted due to the storm, they said.

Bikaner recorded a maximum rainfall of 63 mm, followed by Ganganagar 31.7, Jaisalmer 18.8, Barmer 10, Jodhpur 9, Banswara 6.8, Udaipur 5.7 and Churu 1.0 mm in the past 24 hours.

The squall was moving through Ajmer, Jaipur and Bharatpur, the Met department said, adding heavy to moderate rainswere expected in the districts in the next 24 hours.
