Nagaland Chief Minister S C Jamir, currently NECCC chairman, had the company of only two state units, Sikkim and Assam, which sent their PCC chiefs and CLP leaders to the meeting. One ex-MP from Meghalaya, P K Kyndiah, also attended the meeting. Missing were PCC presidents and CLP leaders from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

There was more trouble for Jamir as the NECCC's founding member and current general secretary B B Datta quit his post. Datta is a Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya and he is expected to announce his resignation from Parliament too in a few days after deciding to back Sangma.

Though the gathering backed the CWCresolution expelling Pawar, Sangma and Anwar, the mood was said to be low-key.

More trouble appears to be brewing in Meghalaya, where the Congress is a member of the ruling alliance; a majority of the MLAs are reportedly backing Sangma. The state Congress unit is said to be on the verge of announcing its split officially, the majority going with Sangma, which will logically lead to the fall of the B B Lyngdoh government.
