MUMBAI, MAY 23: Vasai Eskimoes overwhelmed Fr Agnel Bhavan, Vashi 4-3 in the tie-breaker, after the teams were locked 1-1 in regulation time, in the quarter-final of the inaugural Thane District Hockey Association tournament at Central Police ground, Thane, today.The youthful Fr Agnel boys were kept at bay through the first half by the tough Vasai cordon of veteran Nicolas D'Souza, KR Singh, Mohan Bhaskar and Raju Singh. But a defence lapse in the second half gave Agnel the initiative, with Devrao Devkate scoring finding the target.
Four minutes later, Vasai Eskimoes equalised through a superb field goal by Sanjiv Raut, forcing the tie-break. Raju Singh, Mohan Bhaskar and Bhim Ghale converted for the Eskimoes, while William Rodrigues and Mahesh Shinde scored for Agnel.
In another encounter, star-studded Our Lady of Lourdes, Kalyan, struggled to overcome MPF, Ambernath 2-0. After a goalless first half, Slade Stanley and K Sadanand came good for Lourdes. Thane City Police conceded their tie to Fr AgnelGymkhana after they were starring at a 0-10 deficit half-time. In the fourth quarter-final, Independent Sports Club, Vashi received a walkover from HOC, Rasayani.
St Paul's triumph
St Paul's, Dadar, struck it rich in the second-half when they defeated Bosco Strikers 4-0 in a first-round match of the Guru Nanak football tournament, organised by the MDFA, at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.
St Paul's scored all their four goals in the second session. It would have not been so easy for the Dadar boys had Bosco Strikers' ace forward Avinash Pinheiro had been playing. The striker was admitted to the hospital when he fractured his elbow after only ten minutes of play.
Bosco Strikers gallantly held their opponents to a goalless draw in the first-half but ran out of steam and caved in to the Paul's pressure in the second-half. The Alvares brothers, Dolrich and Francis, shone for the Dadar boys. They scored a brace each for the winners.
Later in the evening, All Parsees failed to put in anappearance for their first-round encounter of the Air-India Trophy against Don Bosco Youth Centre.
Play washed-out
Rain continued to play spoil sport in the Kalpesh Koli cricket tournament (under-16), as the last four league matches were washed out without a ball being bowled at the Matunga ground, here, today.
After the end of the league, Azad Maidan Centre, Chembur Centre, Matunga Centre and the Rest of MCA entered the last four stage after they topped their respective groups. The semi-finals will now be played on Tuesday, May 25 at Matunga only. If rain continues to play havoc, then the semi-finals will be played on Friday 28.
