Cabinet okays GMB proposal
Gandhinagar: The State Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal converting the Gujarat Minorities Board (GMB) into an autonomous corporation. With this, the GMB will now be known as the Gujarat Minorities Development Corporation (GMDC). Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel said the decision to accord the GMB an autonomous status of a corporation would help the body carry out on a large-scale the socio-economic and educational programmes for the uplift of minorities in the State.

Mock drill
Ahmedabad: In the wake of the trouble in Kargil sector, a mock drill was carried out at Ahmedabad airport on late Wednesday afternoon. According to the airport authorities, the objective of the drill was to test the response time of various agencies connected with defence preparedness. The drill took around 40 minutes to complete. Meanwhile, a security meeting has been convened on Thursday afternoon which will be attended among others by Airport Director, Aviation Advisor to the State Government, Commissioner of Police, his deputy in charge of the airport area and Customs officials. They said the airport could be sealed for civil aviation if Pakistan opened a front.

Courtesy call
The Gujarat Naval-Officer-in-Charge Commodore Ajay H Chitnis paid a courtesy call to Gujarat Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

Surat slum fire
Surat: Eight huts were reduced to ashes and two others severely damaged in a major fire that broke out at Nehrunagar slum near Adajan Patia on Wednesday. Although there was no loss of life, property worth lakhs of rupees is reported to have been destroyed.
