JAMNAGAR, May 26: Jamnagar residents will now get water every third day and that too for half an hour. The Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) has taken this step in view of the serious water crisis.JMC has also decided to stop supplying water to all industrial units in the city including Digjam, Mayor Hasmukh Jethwa announced today. He said the water cut would be imposed on Saurashtra's largest government hospital, the Irvin Group of Hospitals here, as well as all the three Defence wings.
``We were compelled to take this decision since the Ranjitsagar dam, the main reservoir, is completely dry and the condition of the three other dams is not very good either. Und-I, Sasoi and Aji-III have water which can last upto June end only. If the monsoon fails or is delayed, we do not have any other source,'' he said.
An urgent meeting of the high-power committee, consisting of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Standing Committee chairman, Municipal Commissioner and Opposition leaders was held on Tuesday in which the Water Works Department of the JMC submitted a detailed status report and a proposal to impose water cut.
The report says frequent power cuts by the GEB have also caused serious problems in pumping and supplying water in the city during the past few days. JMC will have to arrange for at least 20 tankers to supply water to some parts of the city where it cannot supply water through pipeline due to very low pressure.
``This is absolutely a man made crisis because of total mismanagement and non-planning,'' alleged former chairman of the Standing Committee and CPM general secretary, Bhikhubhai Vaghela. He said Jamnagar was getting water supply only on alternate days since the last 14 years and JMC had always ignored the issue.
