AHMEDABAD, May 26: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seems to be moving a step ahead of the Central Government on the retirement age issue. AMC, according to sources, is going to table a proposal to extend the age of retirement of the employees and teaching staff of Municipal Medical Colleges and four hospitals attached to it, to 62 years in the forthcoming Standing Committee meeting scheduled for May 28.The age of retirement of municipal employees at present is 60 years and that of the officials 58 years. The AMC has suggested increasing it by two years for all. The benefit of the age limit would be given only to those persons who had joined the municipal service before October 1, 1984, it said. The AMC had also consulted the Additional Advocate General in this regard.
Officials said the Municipal Commissioner had agreed to the proposal long back. The proposal was based on an ordinance released by the State Government on June 17, 1995. The ordinance was also forwarded by the Education Department and later, the AMC had decided to adopt the same. After the AMC got a nod, they decided to recommend it before the Standing Committee, officials added.
