BJP terms Congress chief's resignation as `big drama'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, MAY 26: In its first reaction to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi's decision to withdraw her resignation, the BJP termed the act as a "big drama" which bared her uninhibited lust for power.

``It was apparently her desire to capture power from backdoor that made her refuse lending support to third front after the fall of the Vajpayee Government'', said the BJP general secretary Narendra Modi.

The briefest-ever AICC session held yesterday also made clear that Congress leaders' love for the country was nothing more than their love for the Nehru-Gandhi family, the BJP leader claimed.

Sonia's mention of Indira Gandhi as the greatest daughter of India, in her presidential speech, also drew criticism from the BJP. ``Her knowledge of Indian history, national freedom struggle and contribution of numerous men and women in evolution of modern India, begins with Jawaharlal Nehru and ends with Rajiv Gandhi'' said Modi adding this was the first time the names of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and SubhasChandra Bose were omitted at the AICC session.

The BJP also tried to delink the Lahore bus diplomacy of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and the escalating tension between India and Pakistan over Kargil. ``We are always in favour of having good relations with our neighbours. But Pakistan has been waging a proxy war against India for the past 10 years despite the Shimla Agreement. If they are doing it again despite Lahore bys visit, it just shows that they have not changed a bit'' Modi said.

The BJP leader refused to acknowledge a mistake on part of Indian intelligence agencies in reporting inflitration of mercenaries inside Indian territory a bit late. ``There is no cause to link the tension to a full-fledged war but India is capable of replying Pakistan's moves in which ever language it understands'' he said.
