Mumbai, May 26: Goals poured as the draught of matches at the Bombay Hockey Association's Mahindra Stadium ended today with the opening tie of the Bombay Hockey Championships.Fr Agnel (Vashi) defeated Dolour's United 20-0 after coach and umpire S S Walia inaugurated the stadium's newly-laid astro-turf by breaking the traditional coconut. The three-year wait, during which the beleagured Mahindra Stadium's cracked turf only invited people tripping on the gaping holes, proved worthwhile as goals came in torrents and players moved in fluent harmony.
Tanveer Shaikh (7 goals), Cyril Bernard (5 including hat-trick), Mahesh Shinde (5 including hat-trick), Max Noronha (2) and Amin Yousuf (1) were the scorers for Agnel against Dolour's who could field only eight players due to shortage in bench strength.
Dolour's lost a player due to injury and decided to play on despite the odds. The defeat to Agnel, coached now by former Tata's player and umpire Blaise Monterio, will probably not hurt that much.
