27-yr-old says tenant raped her and threatened family members

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, MAY 28: A 48-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman in west Delhi over a period of three months. The accused, Vijay Raj Kansara, 48, was also charged with intimidating the victim's family. He has been remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

The victim, who is a theatre personality involved in several literacy projects, did not ever talk about her ordeal, till the police spoke to her about it.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the 48-year-old accused was a tenant in the victim's house for the past two and a half years. Kansara is a supplier for Pratap Engineering Works, a Jodhpur-based company. The ground floor of the victim's house had been given over to the company on rent since the past eight years. The floor also housed the victim's study room.

On December 19, Kansara allegedly came into her room and offered her halwa. According to the victim, the halwa must have been drugged, because after eating it, she fellunconscious. He then allegedly raped her and when she came to afterwards, he threatened to kill her brother if she told anyone.

The victim claims that the sexual assaults continued till February 22. On that day, the accused came in and offered her pulao, this time. When the girl put her foot down, he realised his game was up and later went away to Jodhpur.

The victim, who had kept quiet throughout, finally broke down 10 days ago and told her mother. The latter decided to register a complaint with Kansara's employers, but she did not opt to file a police complaint.

On Wednesday, Kansara allegedly came back with the intention of intimidating the victim, accompanied by some of his men. The victim alleged that he attacked her family. That was when they decided to call the police.

Kansara denied the allegations and said that they had made the accusations after a dispute over the rent. ``The medical examination report will prove that I have not raped her.''

According to the Deputy Commissioner ofPolice (west), Uday Sahay, the medical examination, which is mandatory in all rape cases, will only be an indicator as considerable time had lapsed.

Cases have been registered against Kansara under Section 376, that is rape, causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit an offence (Section 328), causing hurt and endangering life of others (Section 338) and criminal intimidation (Section 506). If convicted, the alleged rapist could face up to 10 years in prison.
