Witness identified accused

SANGLI, May 28: During the identification parade, Tejubhai Lalwani, a hotelier and eye-witness in the Amruta Deshpande murder case, had recognised the suspects Baban Rajput (Shikalgar) and Anil Shinde, then tehsildar of Miraj Suresh Shindagi told the sessions court here today.

Deposing before the court, Shindagi said the identification parade was conducted in Miraj on September 27, 1998. He said that 10 to 12 youths belonging to the same age-group and similar height were brought for the identification parade. Lalwani immediately recognised the two suspects. He said both suspects' faces were covered with veils when they were brought to the site of the parade.

Shindagi further said Sangli's Police Superintendent Tukaram Chavan had informed that there was no need to include the third suspect Mukund Shinde in the identification parade.

J. J. Bardekar who cross examined Shindagi sought information as to from where the suspects were brought to the site of the identification parade. However, Shindagi said he did not have this information. He also refuted the charge that the identification parade was a mere farce.

Parvin Bidiwale, a witness to the inquest panchnama of the body of Amruta Deshpande and the murder site was also examined today. He said that the information about the number of stabs on Amruta's body and other measures were recorded by the doctors in his presence and that only then, he had signed on the inquest panchnama.

Amruta's parents were not present in the court today.
