ROOPNAGAR, May 28: Fearing floods in the district, the authorities have identified 15 of the most sensitive points along the rivers and sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore for necessary protection work.Disclosing this to ENS, Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu said that the Chief Minister had announced the grant at yesterday's meeting at Chandigarh to review flood-fighting arrangements in at least six districts of Punjab.
The meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Minister, was attended by six other deputy commissioners who represent the districts through which the Sutlej river passes.
Apart from the 45-km stretch of the Sutlej in the district, Siswan, Budhki and Sawan rivulets are reportedly among the list of most sensitive points that need immediate protection work.
In all, 38 points were identified for protection. Of these, 15 were declared most sensitive. Sidhu has apprised the state irrigation department of the flood threat. He said all the sensitive points would be plugged before June 30.
