CHANDIGARH, May 28: A public interest litigation filed by special correspondent of Akali Patrika S. S. Bajwa, seeking "proper investigations and registration of criminal cases against officials found prima facie guilty in the multi crore wheat, paddy and gunny bag scam", has been dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court here.Pronouncing the orders in the open court, Justice N. K. Sodhi and Justice V. S. Aggarwal held: "Petitioner, who claims himself to be a journalist, should have verified the press reports on which he was relying before making the allegations which form the basis of the writ petition. We have, therefore, no hesitation in dismissing this writ petition. Ordered accordingly".
In their order, the bench observed: "The news item which appeared in the press is obviously false. It may be mentioned that soon after the publication of the press report, the FCI promptly published a denial in the press and stated that some vested interests were trying to tarnish the image of the corporation and that no gunny bags had been purchased from any private party and that gunny bags were purchased at the prices fixed by the Government of India."
Earlier, in his petition, Bajwa had claimed that "millions of poor people had been deprived of food grain at cheaper and reasonable rates under the Punjab distribution scheme of the government."
