PARIS, MAY 28: Tim Henman, who had failed to make it past the first round of the French Open in three previous appearances, fell to Spanish baseliner Alberto Berasategui in the third round today.Berasategui's 4-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 6-4 win was all the more galling for the seventh-seeded Briton as he had seemed in control of the match against the Spanish claycourt specialist.
Henman, who has improved a lot on clay recently, led 6-4 6-4 2-0 before Berasategui fought back and eventually won in three hours 26 minutes of an up-and-down match.
Even though he slumped to 97th in the world rankings after a series of six consecutive first round losses earlier this year the Spaniard, a losing finalist at Roland Garros in 1994, showed he is still a major threat on clay.He now faces a real test of his form as he meets the winner of the clash between ninth seed Marcelo Rios of Chile and Spain's Albert Costa. On Thursday, unseeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine wrecked Pete Sampras' quest for the only Grand Slam title he hasnever won.
Medvedev beat the American second seed 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in their second round match in two hours , 21 minutes.
Sampras' exit left former men's champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil, seeded eighth, as the only seed left in the bottom quarter of the draw.
Kuerten went through following a 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Guillermo Canas of Argentina despite a whopping 61 unforced errors.
PIERCE OUSTED: Eighth seed Mary Pierce fell 4-6 6-3 6-3 to Conchita Martinez in a bad-tempered second round clash. Both players received warnings for time-wasting -- Pierce eventually lost a penalty point -- during the marathon Centre Court clash.
Pierce won the opening set comfortably enough but then, at 6-4 2-3, she appeared ready to pull out of the match, apparently suffering from the heat. With the temperature on court at more than 30 degrees Celsius, she called the tournament doctor on for the second time, appearing dizzy and faint. The French player had already received treatment for blisters earlier in thematch. She poured water over her head and was then led off court by the doctor.
After three minutes Pierce had still not reappeared and umpire Jane Harvey announced a warning for delay of play. A frustrated Martinez sat pouring over a book before pointedly asking the umpire: ``she can have whatever she wants ?'' The next game Pierce went to the bench to get a new racket and was hit with a penalty point deduction for wasting time. Pierce went on to lose that set 6-3. She then disappeared off court for a `bathroom break.'
Martinez was next to incur the umpire's wrath and received a warning for time wasting at the start of the third set. Pierce's performance was also punctuated with her customary gesticulation and posturing which, at one stage, prompted Martinez to say from the other end of the court: ``come on, Mary.''
