Probe Bhatia's role in land deal -- DGP

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, MAY 31: The Director General of Police, has recommended the State Government to conduct a probe into Pune Municipal Commissioner Arun Bhatia's role in a mahar watan

land deal conducted during his tenure as the Divisional Commissioner of Pune under the provisions of the Anti Corruption Act.

Confirming this, Police commissioner K K Kashyap said that this was a ``regular procedure in any investigation where, if we feel that certain irregularities come under the Anti Corruption Act, then the State Government is approached to conduct further investigations by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB)''.

In this case, he added, the investigating officer had come upon prima facie evidence that suggested that undue favours were shown to a Aditya Maharaj Singh by the Divisional Commissioner's office in 1997.

It may be recalled that on May 17, a complaint was filed against Aditya Maharaj Singh, a real estate agent, under section 406 of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of a complaint filed by M/s Kolhe, aleave reserved Deputy Collector.

According to the FIR, Singh was accused of misplacing vital files pertaining to the deal. Singh had applied to the District Collector's (DC) office for purchasing mahar watan land in Khubavali village in Mulshi taluka in 1997. Permission was granted to Singh after the DC's office got the mandatory permission from the divisional commissioner's office.

The orders were released on three days, September 29, October 29 and November 6, 1997. According to the FIR the files had to be sent to the tehsildar's office. Singh approached the DC's office offering to carry the files to the tehsildar's office. He initially was turned down by the clerk at the DC office.

The FIR further stated that a clerk from the divisional commissioner's office, R B Khan, had called up the DC's office granting permission to hand over the files to Singh. In April 1999 the DC's office started an inquiry into the deal following complaints that the mahar watan land deal had certainirregularities. During the inquiry it was discovered that the files were missing.
