3 LTTE suspects held

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, MAY 31: The city police have taken into custody three Sri Lankans, suspected to be members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), at Bangalore airport on May 27.

The intelligence wing, on a routine check of the Kuala Lumpur flight, found the three persons in possession of forged passports issued at Hyderabad. They have been identified as Kavitha Jayaraman, Shivalingam Priya and T Darshan. A child, identified as Baby Nirosha, was also with them.

In April, the Union Home Ministry alerted the intelligence wing about LTTE personnel travelling in the country. The Ministry had also released a list of suspects. According to sources, those arrested at the airport on Thursday featured on the list.

The trio revealed in the course of iterrogation that they were of Sri Lankan origin, settled in Thirumallur, Tamil Nadu. They said they were going to Kuala Lumpur and had renewed their passports in Hyderabad, according to police.

The police have taken the trio to Tamil Nadu for furtherinvestigations. They will be brought back to Bangalore by Tuesday.

The City police have sent the details regarding the arrest to the External Affairs Ministry, Union Home Ministry, the Chennai police and other departments.

The Airport police have registered a case against the Sri Lankans under the Passports Act. However, whether the arrested are indeed LTTE militants, will be known only after investigations.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Intelligence Bureau officials have arrived in Bangalore to interrogate the trio.
