Fisherfolk recount Saturday night's horror

Himansu S Sahoo
BHUBANESWAR, MAY 31: Late on Saturday night 15-year-old Santosh Behera of Sorana near Kuhudi village of Khurda district was sleeping on the verandah of his house when the sound of bullets woke him up. Before he could realise, a bullet hit his right hand and he collapsed. He came back to his senses to find himself in the surgical ward of Unit-VI Capital hospital here.

It still remains a puzzle for the innocent teenager as to who shot him and why. He has no idea about gheri eviction and `Chilika Bachao Andolan', but fell victim to it.

Sundari Behera (50) of Sorana, suffered multiple bullet injuries on her forehead and waist. She was preparing to go to bed when she heard a noise and opened the door out of curiosity. ``As soon as I peeped out, something hit my forehead and a sharp thing hit my waist. I passed out. When I came to, I found myself in a pool of blood in the hospital verandah,'' Sundari recalled.

Bijay Behera, whose mother Nalini sustained grievous injuries on waist and leg, recountedSaturday's incident. ``After completing the day's eviction work, the fishermen's representatives held a meeting at about 9 pm to plan for Sunday's eviction. The meeting continued for about two hours after which all villagers dispersed. At about 1 am, a man from a nearby village rushed to Sorana and nearby villages and informed that 20 of their representatives had been arrested by the police,'' he said.

Incensed, nearly 5,000 villagers surrounded the police van and forcibly released the arrested members. In the melee, police opened fire, lobbed tear-gas shells and lathicharged the villagers.

After police left the spot, one Banchanidhi Behera was found dead on the streets and several found lying unconscious with bullet injuries.

According to sources, the injured had to wait for nearly five agonising hours in the absence of doctors. Patients' relatives complained that they had to purchase most of the prescribed medicines as the hospital authorities refused to provide them free medicines.

Most of theinjured said the police arrested their relatives from the hospital campus. Abhay Behera, 17, an injured fisherman, alleged that city police arrested his father Durlabha Behera from the Hospital premises while the latter had gone to bring medicine for him.
