PUNE, MAY 31: Realising that there is a vast scope for tree plantation and waste land development, particularly after the merger of 17 villages in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, the civic body has embarked on an urban forestry and horticulture development plan to be implemented over a period of next 10 years. The plan aims at achieving environmental protection in an integrated manner in the village as well as the urban areas. Pimpri-Chinchwad limits are now spread over an area of 206 square kilometers, after 17 villages were merged in the earlier municipal limits in September 1997.
Additional municipal commissioner R B Konde told The Indian Express that the corporation intended to involve all social organisations, institutions, urban planners and environment experts for making optimum use of land for tree plantations, developing of gardens, landscaping, and beautification along highways. ``We also want to involve common people for the work,'' Konde said.
A survey will be undertaken initially of the existing and new tree plantation areas, and land use plans for future afforestation along rivers, railway lines, quarries, industrial belts, school and college areas, roads and highways will be prepared. Surveys of the existing gardens, as also areas where gardens could be developed, beautification and forestry in roads and drainage nallahs, river banks and the village areas is also to be initiated. A panel of the social institutions and environmental experts is likely to be formed for coordinating the extensive work.
