PUNE, MAY 31: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) has planned a nation-wide agitation (satyagraha) from June 20 to support thousands of tribal families in the Narmada valley for whom submergence is unavoidable after raising the height of the controversial dam project by eight meters. It has called upon intellectuals and other sections ofsociety in the country to participate in the agitation.NBA president Medha Patkar while announcing this on Sunday has raised questions about the gains accruing from the SSP particularly for Maharashtra, which she said has already lost near 10,600 hectares of forest land, failed to rehabilitate the tribals and probably will lose a whooping Rs 2000 crore as capital investment for the hydro-power project.
Speaking to newspersons on Sunday, Patkar charged that false affidavits have been submitted by the Maharashtra government making tall claims of `ideal' rehabilitation, and said that the claims of the Government regarding availability of the land to an extent of 449 hectares and its readiness to raise the height of the dam to 110 meters have been proved as baseless.
Patkar referred to the inter-state water dispute raised by Madhya Pradesh and said that it was necessary for Maharashtra to review the project in terms of the gains and the costs incurred for it. The State is to get 27 per cent of power that is generated from the project. The projected `firm power' to be generated is 415 MW for a maximum of thirty years, and from the canal project the actual power will not be more than just 50 MW. At present the power generation is just negligible, she said.
She added that the SSP affected tribals in the State are all out to prove the false claims of the Government that land is available for resettlement. As the monsoon get closer now, the Narmada is expected to rise and drown 2000 families with lands and houses. ``It has become all the more necessarily to expose the authorities, who have cunningly obtained the permission of raising of the Sardar Sarovar Dam height by 5 + 3 (humps) to 88 meters.'' The people have taken up the challenge again, to prove the State Government, that no land is available for rehabilitating the oustees of about 25 villages this year.
Patkar on Sunday held a meeting of the activists in the city to plan its future strategy regarding the agitation. The agitation will begin on June 20 and its camps will be at Domkhedi in Maharashtra and Jansindhi in Madhya Pradesh.
