Kalmadi to Bhatia -- Let's talk it over

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, MAY 31: Rajya Sabha member Suresh Kalmadi who recently returned to the Congress fold did not miss the opportunity to draw the Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander's attention to the ongoing tussle between the elected representatives and the civic administration.

At a function organised by the Pune Municipal Corporation to unveil the statue of freedom fighter Kamalnayan Bajaj at Wakdewadi on the Mumbai-Pune highway, Kalmadi emphasised the need for a proper coordination between the corporators and the municipal administration. ``Development work in Pune will be severely hampered if things go on the way they are,'' Kalmadi cautioned.

``We have a lot of work on our hands and it is essential to work together," Kalmadi said quipping it takes two hands to clap. "We are ready for a dialogue with the municipal commissioner. Now it's their turn,'' Kalmadi added.

Incidentally, Municipal Commissioner Arun Bhatia whose gentlemen etiquette made him vacate the chair to let the ladies occupy the seat, refused to take his ``reserved'' seat at the dais and preferred to stand throughout the function. An example of how upset the mayor is over Bhatia's alleged highhandedness was when he quipped to media persons that ``Bhatia refused to take the seat on the dais as he was `scared' of the Governor.''

Redrafted: Meanwhile, Bhatia today submitted the redrafted proposal pertaining to the reallocation of funds amounting to Rs 37.92 crore to the standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The proposal suggests that an amount of Rs 15.94 crore, which is 42 per cent of the amount recommended to be reallocated, should be spent for development works at various slums. The rest of the amount should be spent on development of fringe villages which have been merged in the PMC limits, according to the proposal.
