Venkatesh emerges sole leader

CALCUTTA: M R Venkatesh of Tamil Nadu emerged sole leader with 5.5 points after the sixth round in the boys' under-14 of the 12th National Children's Chess Championship.

Former world under-10 champion P Harikrishna of Andhra Pradesh, V Barik of Gujarat, Saptarshi Roy of Bengal and Somak Palit of Bengal were in second position with five points each after the sixth round.

In the girls' under-14, C Delphin of Tamil Nadu was the sole leader with 5.5 points after the sixth round, while Vaisakhi Das was behind her with five points.

In the girls' under-12, R Mahima of Tamil Nadu and Eesha Taravade of Maharashtra were jointly in lead with 5.5 points each.

Punjab champs

BANGALORE: Punjab boys and Kerala girls annexed titles in the fifth National Youth Volleyball Championships, which concluded at Chikkaballapur, on Sunday.

Last year's runners up Punjab defeated Tamil Nadu 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 21-19. Kerala beat West Bengal 25-21, 25-15, 25-18 to win thetitle for the fourth time in a row.

Rafiq, Vishal tied

BANGALORE: Rafiq Ali and Vishal Singh were tied at the top spot after carding identical scores of three-under 69 on the opening day of the Rs 6 lakh Wills Open at the Karnataka Golf Association Golf Course.

Placed second at two-under 70 was Vijay Kumar. At joint third spot were Gast Ram and Amritinder Singh at one-under 71.

Yoga recognised

CHANDIGARH: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has accorded recognition to Yoga Federation of India (YFI) with its headquarters at Panchkula.
