MUMBAI, MAY 31: Mumbai Port Trust made the quarter-finals of the Bombay Hockey Championship when they beat Fr Agnel Gymkhana 6-4 via the tie-breaker after the two were level 2-2 after regulation time at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate, today.MPT took an early lead through a penalty-corner conversion by Shane D'Costa in the 14th minute and then, struck again in the 19th minute through a good field goal by Leonard Pereira.
Tanveer Shaikh pulled a goal back for Fr Agnel in the 35th minute. Ilyas Khan made it 2-2 by converting a stroke in the second session.
In the tie-breaker, Abhijit Shirsat, S Krishnamurthy, Javed Shaikh and IS Negi converted for Port Trust. Only Shaukat Ali and Neil Pimenta were successful for Fr Agnel.
Lourdes XI champs
Lourdes XI, Kalyan, defeated Vasai Eskimos 4-1 in the final of the inaugural Thane District Hockey Association tournament at the Central Police ground, Thane, yesterday.
In an exciting game, both teams started cautiously weighing each other's game plan.Lourdes wrested the lead in the 12th minute when Vivek D'Souza converted a penalty-corner.
Eskimos, who were touched to the quick, equalised in the 19th minute when Rizwan caught Lourdes goalkeeper Behram Mohta on the wrong foot after he deflected home a hard shot from near the 25-yard line by Agnelo D'Souza.
Martin Fernandes made the most of a defensive lapse to make it 2-1 for Lourdes. Thereafter, Sadanand Kahar and Elroy Rodrigues struck for the winners.
The following were adjudged best: Eskimos' Bhim Ghale (defender) and Mohan Bhasker (halve), MPTF's Sameer Jadhav (forward) and Lourdes' Behram Mohta (goalkeeper).
Apostolic Carmel top
The Bombay Women's Hockey Association (BWHA)-conducted Sub-junior girls competion was won by Apostolic Carmel Convent, Bandra. They beat St Francis Xavier School, Kanjurmarg 1-0. The winner was scored by Genevieve Monteiro.
