Bangla stun Pak, sack coach

Agencies
NORTHAMPTON, MAY 31: Rank outsider Bangladesh created the biggest upset of the World Cup, defeating Pakistan by 62 runs today, even as they sacked former West Indies opener Gordon Greenidge as national coach.

Chasing 223 for nine in 50 overs, Pakistan were bowled out for 161 in 44.3 overs. This was Pakistan's first defeat. Medium pacer Khalid Mahmud took three for 31 to rattle the Pakistani top order. Earlier, put in to bat, a highly improved batting performance helped Bangladesh reach 223 for nine. Former skipper Akram Khan struck 42 after openers Shahriyar Hossain and Mehrab Hossain posted 69 runs.

Greenidge's roller-coaster tenure ended when Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directed him to step down in a letter delivered yesterday. Greenidge will, however, keep his job as BCB's coaching director. Greenidge was not present when the eleven for today's match was picked. It was a dramatic exit for someone who was hailed as a national hero and granted an honorary Bangladeshi citizenship by Prime MinisterHasina Wajed in 1997 when Bangladesh qualified for the World Cup for the first time by winning the ICC trophy.

Earlier, put in to bat, a highly improved batting performance helped Bangladesh reach a creditable 223 for nine. Former skipper Akram Khan struck 42 after openers Shahriyar Hossain (39) and Mehrab Hossain (9) posted 69 runs for the first wicket.
