PUNE, MAY 31: Deccan fc `a' scored two penalties to deal Parshuramians a 3-1 defeat in the Kishorilal Memorial football tournament at Ghorpuri Military Ground, today. In another match, Old Boys Association (OBA) won a cliff-hanger against the resurgent Ghorpuri Young Ones with a solitary second-half goal. Both teams, with today's wins, have marched into the last eight of the championship and will joint the three outstation teams (two from Mumbai and one from Miraj), who have been given bye into the quarter-finals.
Striker Nilesh Natu was instrumental in the PDFA league champions' victory. His proficient control did much to induce cohesion in Deccan's play.
Parshuramians looked disjointed and their make-shift keeper Gopi Lonkar, who was limping, was found wanting in clearances.
Nevertheless, brothers Parshuramians Rahul and Rohit threatened, but could not strike when needed. As the pressure mounted, Parshuramians sadly adopted rough play. Deccan FC XI took full advantage of the situation and it was in the 25th minute that they forged ahead. Natu cut past a crowded defence and just as he was to take strike, he was tackled from behind. Referee MS Rawat rightly pointed to the dreaded spot and Amit Uchil made no mistake.
A similar foul in the 60th fetched another penalty and Uchil executed perfectly again. Three minutes later, Natu himself entered the scoresheet after nodding home.
For Parshuramains, Satish Deodhar scored the only goal when he perfectly angled a free-kick from the edge of the box beating Anshuman Pandhere all hands down.
The other encounter, between OBA and once formidable Ghorpuri Young Ones, produced good soccer. For Ghorpuri Young Ones, Vijay Kamane was guilty of missing an easy chances as he failed to tap in a lobbed ball just in front of the goalmouth.
On the other hand, OBA's Antao brothers -- Joe and Brenton -- along with Salamat Irani in defence and Steven Thangarajan excelled. But their keeper Xerxes often drew jeers for holding on to the ball. It brooked retribution on one occasion from referee Moti John who awarded a free-kick and adverse reaction from OBA who converged on to the referee protesting the decision.Timely intervention of OBA veteran Bhupinder Singh, saved the situation from getting out of hand.
OBA finally struck the match-winner when striker Romel Hendry scored in the 43rd minute. Romel combined with Brenton before lobbing over the advancing keeper S Naike into the net.
