Jr hockey Natls in Bangalore

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, May 31: Pune has been sidestepped for Bangalore as hosts for the 30th Junior National Hockey championships.

Originally planned to be held in the city from June 11 to 25, the tournament will now be run at Bangalore from June 16 to 30, according to K Krishnamoorthy, secretary of the Karnataka State Hockey Association.

It is believed that the tournament would go well with the Senior national camp being held at the same venue to select the side for the South African tour.

Maharashtra Hockey Association secretary Benny Boodle told The Indian Express today that the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) were insistent that the tournament be held in June but the MHA were not in a position to play hosts before September.

An IHF delegation, including executive co-ordinater Robert Lawrence had even visited Pune a few weeks ago to check out facilities for the event. A subsequent report in a section of the press informed that the tournament would be held at the PCMC Poligras Stadium from June 11 to 25. The event will form the basis of selection of the junior national side to Poland for an eight-nation tournament in July-August.

State junior team selection
The MHA, in the meantime, have drawn up plans for selecting and training the Maharashtra squad for Bangalore.

Those players born on or after 1.1.79 are requested to contact Harry Anthony (Chairman Tournament Organising Committee) or Stanley D'Souza (member) at the PCMC stadium at 3.00 p.m. on June 2. They should bring along original birth/school/college certificates. Brigadier Adi Irani is the chairman of the selection committee which will comprise Victor Ellis, Harry Anthony, MA Razak, Kumar Agalgaonkar (Kolhapur) and Benny Boodle. Eligible players from the districts of Kolhapur, Sangli, Nashik, Satara and Ahmednagar are also invited for the trials.

State ranking tennis at Sangli
Over 200 players from all over the state have conformed their participation for the state ranking tennis tournament commencing from June 7 to 13, at the Amrai club courts, Sangli.

The Bharti Krida Academy, Pune sponsored tournament will be held in the boys under-8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 age groups, while the girls section will have contest in the under-12, 14 and 16 age group, informed Prashant Sutar, tournament director here today.
