Suharto to be wiped off Indonesian banknotes

REUTERS
JAKARTA, June 1: Indonesia will issue new 50,000 rupiah ($6.33) banknotes today without the face of reviled former president Suharto.

A statement from the central bank said the notes, the highest in circulation in Indonesia, would carry the picture of Soepratman, the man who wrote the country's national anthem.

The statement did not mention Suharto by name but the move marks a further humiliation to the former strongman, who led Indonesia for more than three decades before stepping down in disgrace one year ago amid a political and economic crisis. Current 50,000 rupiah notes -- carrying Suharto's smiling face and the words `Father of Indonesian Development' will still circulate, the statement added.

A A Baramuli, chairman of President B J Habibie's advisory council, said earlier this year that bank notes and stamps featuring Suharto would be replaced with the faces of Indonesian heroes or pictures of flora and fauna.

Meanwhile, Suharto's oldest son was questioned today over allegations that thefamily of the man who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for 32 years illegally accumulated a fortune. Two other Suharto children were questioned recently, and the rest are expected to follow in coming days.

And the capital turned green as the National Awakening Party, one of biggest of the 48 parties fielding candidates, held its last rally in Jakarta. Three campaign days are left before a two-day cooling-off period that immediately precedes the voting.
