Serbian parliament accepts peace plan

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
Belgrade, June 3: The Serbian parliament today accepted a peace plan for Kosovo put to Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic by EU and Russian envoys, assembly sources said.

The proposals to the 250-seat assembly were submitted by the European Union's envoy, Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, and Russian emissary Viktor Chernomyrdin.

The plan was approved by 136 members, while 74 voted against, said Dragan Veselinov, a deputy with the opposition coalition Vojvodina. Three asbtained.

Finnish foreign ministry spokesman Yejo Lansituro told AFP that the talks between the two envoys and Milosevic would be resumed "as soon as possible" after the parliamentay vote. The outlines of the plan were agreed on May 6 by foreign ministers of the Group of Eight industrialised nations.

Details have since been fleshed out in successive rounds of talks between Chernomyrdin, Ahtisaari and US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott.
