KOZHIKODE, JUNE 3: The explosive substances recovered from the Kochi-Kurla Netravathy Express in Kasargod on Saturday were meant to trigger a series of low-intensity blasts in Mumbai to coincide with the Lok Sabha elections, according to Intelligence sources. The recent blasts in Tamil Nadu may have been intended to draw the authorities' attention to the ``torture'' of Al-Umma activists in various jails in the State, they add.
The Tamil Nadu police defused three time device bombs, one each in Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore and Chennai on Sunday. Two bombs had exploded in Chennai and Triplicane in the early hours of Sunday.
The leaflets seized by police in Kasargod related to demands for the release of Al-Umma activists allegedly being persecuted in Tamil Nadu jails. Some of the leaflets seized in Tamil Nadu also contained the demands.
The Kerala police say the leaflets were akin to those seized from the train and also in Triplicane. This indicates the involvement of the Al-Umma in the incidents in boththe States, police say.
