Pakistan's perfidy in the Kargil sector has apparently taken the Government by surprise. What is worse, even after it was discovered, the Government took too long to put its act together. The Pakistani attempt to vitiate the relatively peaceful atmosphere in Jammu & Kashmir should have been anticipated. Return to normalcy in the state did not suit Pakistan. It had to do something. There is no point denying the fact that a massive failure has taken place at various levels. The people of this country have been let down once again, this time by the so-called nationalist Government. The bus journey to Lahore was a sensible diplomatic initiative, but why was there so much drum-beating to lull ourselves into a false sense of security? Today, we are the victims of our own rhetoric. National pride has been badly hurt.
This, however, is not the time for emotional outbursts or apportioning blame. That can wait till the invaders are driven out of our land. The persons responsible for national security, however highthey might be, will have to be held accountable for their acts of omission and commission. But not now.
This is the time for cool and calculated action and not for playing political games and irresponsible rhetoric. Nothing should be said or done, especially by those in a position of power, which will confuse and demoralise the brave men who are shedding their blood for maintaining the sovereignty and integrity of our motherland. The invaders have to be punished, and punished hard, so that they will not dare to repeat their misadventures in future.
