Army gains in Batalik but loses six men

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
SRINAGAR, JUNE 3: Backed by air strikes, Indian troops achieved a major breakthrough today when they dislodged Pakistan-aided infiltrators from seven to nine positions in Batalik sub-sector today, a top army source said here.

Two army officers, four other personnel and 34 infiltrators were killed and 12 army personnel wounded in gunbattles in Batalik, Drass and Mendhar areas of Kargil and Poonch sectors, the source said.

Seven to nine positions held by Pakistan-backed infiltrators were cleared of the aggressors in Batalik sub sector by killing 11 of them at the line of control.

Five army personnel, including Lt Col Vishwanathan, had laid down their lives fighting the infiltrators, he said.

In Kaksar area of Kargil, Captain Vikram lost his life while four others, including Major Shekhawat, were injured in shelling by Pakistani troops last night, the source said.

Four infiltrators who were bringing supplies for their colleagues inside the Indian territory from Pakistan were shot dead by the troops inthe vicinity, he said.

In the intense ground level battle between infiltrators and army troops, 12 Pakistan-backed intruders were killed in Drass last night, the source said.

Troops also scuttled a fresh infiltration bid in Batalik sub-sector this morning. The infiltrators tried to sneak under cover of intense artillery shelling by Pakistani troops but were pushed back when Indian troops returned the fire effectively, he added.
