Megawati finishes campaign in style
AFP
Jubilant supporters of popular Opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri took over the streets of Jakarta on Thursday, determined to make the city theirs on the penultimate day of campaigning for Monday's elections. Even though street rallies were supposed to be banned during Indonesia's 17-day campaign, which ends on Friday, the edict has been completely ignored. Streams of Megawati supporters began flooding the streets even before midnight on Wednesday. They came on motorbikes, in cars or squashed side by side into rattling trucks draped with the red flags and the ``angry bull'' symbol of Megawati's Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP). They circled the Central Welcome roundabout beeping horns or rythmically revving engines in a joyful display of support. By the early hours, the numbers had dwindled, but as the sun rose, they were back to make good use of their final 24 hours of campaign time. Megawati, the daughter of Indonesia's first President, Sukarno, was due to spend Thursday addressing finalrallies before Monday's vote.Meanwhile, TIME magazine is ready to face Suharto in court over an investigative report carried by it claiming his family had amassed a $15-billion fortune, a lawyer said on Thursday.
