Musharraf's effigy hanged

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, June 3: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists in the city today hung to death the effigy of Parvez Musharraf, Chief of Army Staff, Pakistan, in protest against his role in helping infiltration into Indian territory at Kargil. Addressing the rally in front of the BJP office in Sector 33, BJYM president Satinder Singh said: "This act of the Pakistan army is shameful and condemnable." He criticised the Congress for politicking on Kargil instead of standing by the government in this hour of national concern. City BJP president Dharam Pal Gupta said: "It is in bad taste that the opposition is trying to gain political mileage out of a situation which requires national security concern."

BJYM leaders present at the rally included Sanjeev Chadda, Shakti Prakash Devshali, Rakesh Sharma, Kuldeep Luthra, Gajendra Sharma and Jarnail Singh Bajwa.

In a release here, the local unit of Samata Party has condemned the Chandigarh District Youth Congress (Urban) for burning the effigy of Defence Minister George Fernandes. "It is immature of any political forum to have done this when an Army operation is on," said unit president Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal, vice president B. S. Dhaliwal and general secretary Prit Pal Singh.
