PRTC employees' strike evokes mixed response

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PATIALA, JUNE 3: The strike by the PEPSU Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) employees, having alliance with four employees' unions, today got a mixed response. The striking employees organised a protest rally at the the main bus stand here this afternoon and also burnt effigies of the management authorities.

Among those who addressed the rally were Gurbax Singh Tiwana, president Karamchari Dal, Jarnail Singh, general secretary of Karamchari Dal, Sucha Singh, president, CITU, and Harbhajan Singh Kanganwal, chief organising secretary, CITU, Gurbax Ram and Sohan Lal, president and chairman of SC/BC Employees Union, and Rupinder Pal and Bachan Singh, president and general secretary of AITUC, threatened to launch an agitation if the management failed to accept the demands and withdraw the recently added contractual system as early as possible.

The striking employees claimed that the bus service in the state was badly affected. They said the corporation had succeeded in plying the buses at Patiala and adjoining cities only. However, the management authorities of the corporation claimed that the strike had failed to make any dent in the functioning of bus services. Bikram, MD PRTC, said the corporation had made arrangements to run the services and claimed that attendance in the PRTC depots was over 90 per cent.
