Mob attacks police team in Junagadh

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, June 3: A junagadh police team was forced to fire one round in the air after a mob attacked it over the installation of GEB lights outside the Ambuja factory.

A police party, headed by Assistant Sub Inspector Kantilal Bavanji and Namdev Baluk, had been stationed outside the Ambuja cement factory, Rampara in Junagadh, following some tension in the area. Police said that at about 3 am on Thursday, about seven to eight people arrived at the factory and asked the police officer why the authorities had got the Gujarat Electricity Board lights installed. The officer on duty replied that they were not concerned since the matter came under GEB's jurisdiction.

Soon, the mob started pelting stones at the police officers on duty and some others who were present on the spot.

According to the police, the officers were also attacked with weapons. Despite several warnings, the mob went out of control, forcing the Bavanji to fire one round in the air from his revolver to disperse the crowd. However, no one was injured in the incident.

Police said that the situation was under control and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city during the day.
