Octroi department nabs trader, slaps fine

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, June 3: An intelligence squad has caught red-handed a trader who tried to evade octroi duty on goods for the seventh time. Octroi officials said that they had slapped a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the notorious trader Mangilal Marwadi. The Income Tax Department and Central Excise and Sales Tax Department have also been informed about this.

Officials said acting on a tip-off, the intelligence branch kept a vigil near Piplaj village on Wednesday night and intercepted his truck (GJ-1-7089). Officials found that the truck was loaded with titanium oxide and was brought from China through various agencies. The chemical was valued at around Rs 5 lakh, they said.

Officials also found that the truck had entered the municipal limits without paying Rs 50,000 as octroi duty. They said that the truck was impounded immediately for the recovery of the duty. Octroi officials said that owner of the truck, Mangilal had been booked six times earlier also for evading duty. The Octroi Department had so far recovered Rs 2 lakh from him in different cases of evasions.
