PUNE, JUNE 4: More than 113 Corporators of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have unanimously moved a no-confidence motion against the Municipal Commissioner Arun Bhatia for a slew of charges. And in another move, the chief minister Narayan Rane today gave a go-ahead to an Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) probe into a land deal conducted during his tenure as Pune Municipal Commissioner.
A special meeting of the general body will be held on June 9 which is likely to seal Bhatia's fate even before the controversial bureaucrat completes three months in office.
The charges incorporated in the motion drives home the corporators' obvious discontent over Bhatia's ``dictatorial'' attitude and ``total breakdown of any kind of communication with the elected representatives'' among a host of other things.
Mayor Dutta Gaikwad told media persons today that last one-and-a-half months have been an eye-opener for the corporators; allegedly, Bhatia's lack of interest in participating in general body meetings and hisnot bothering to get acquainted with the corporators have become major hitches.
Complaining about the high-handed style of functioning, the members are particularly aggrieved about his arbitrary approach to development works and the proposed reallocation of Rs 38 crore from the budget.
Gaikwad said `traditionally all municipal commissioners discuss important topics related to financial matters with the Mayor, Standing Committee chairman and members,' but Bhatia worked totally in contrast with the set norms of decorum and never bothered to directly deal with the elected members. The Mayor pointed out that the general body meeting had even been adjourned once to protest against Bhatia's dictatorial attitude. He failed to take action when corporators lodged complaints about the encroachments on Government land, Gaikwad said, adding that various proposals were put forth by the Commissioner without discussing it with the office bearers.
