CII career show hit with students

CHANDIGARH, June 4: With XII standard results of both CBSE and ISC out, the career show at Confederation of Indian Industries is just the thing for the students in a dilemma over their career choice. `Alternatives' - a three day exposition on Education and Careers started today at the CII with students, both from schools and colleges, making a beeline for the sessions being held. Career show sessions on Public Relations, Hospitality and Personality Development were held.

S.K.Mitra, Director, Client Services and Branch Manager, Hindustan Thomson Associates talked about the basic fundamentals of Public Relations. Identifying a mass communication degree, basic knowledge of computers, undergraduate degree, interaction with people as some of the basic requisites, Mitra clarified certain limitations and myths regarding such a job. Another presentation on a career in the Hotel Industry was given by Stephan Head, Principal, Oberoi Centre of Training and Development.

He said, "Tourism Industry is the world's largest industry which contributes 11 per cent to the global economy, employs 10 per cent of global work force and its growth is faster than the overall GDP." The Director of Master Mind Dinesh Kumar, answering queries on balanced personality said that it was about making a conscious effort to upgrade learning through reading, writing, challenging, and taking time to think. "Peripherals like dressing well, being well behaved, mannerisms are also important aspects of a good personality, but a completely confident personality would have well developed spiritual, mental and emotional strength," said Dinesh Kumar.

At the exhibition as many as 28 stalls, offering information about professional courses like MBA, gave the students a busy and informative day. Among the foreign universities and colleges giving out information about their courses are the University of Leeds, Holborn College London, Middlesex University. A stall has been set up by the British Council to explain career oppurtunities in the UK.

Stalls have also been put up by various consultants offering career oppurtunities in UK, USA, Australia and Canada.A stall has also been put up by Worldwide Immigration Consultancy Services offering immigration oppurtunities and diploma courses in different fields. The Competition Master has put up a stall of books for those competing in various disciplines. These include books for preparing exams of MBA, general knowledge and reasoning. Various computer centres have also put up stalls including TULEC, Chandigarh Infotech. Other stalls include that of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Technocrat Institute of Technology, Shilon R.M.Institute of Hospitality Management at Shilon Bagh, Shimla.
