`Need for people's participation in city planning' stressed

CHANDIGARH, June 4: An autonomous body of professionals is needed for the planning, development and monitoring of city's future expansion, said the experts at a seminar organised here on the eve of Environment Day by the local unit of Environment Society of India.Presiding over the seminar ``The Environment Chandigarh'', former principal of College of Architecture, S.S.Bhatti, said there should be greater involvement of citizens in forming the master plan of new sectors. ``Those residing in slums are an indispensable part of the city's population. They should be provided with easily affordable, hygienic and eco-friendly accommodation and other amenities'', he suggested. Environment Society president S.K.Sharma, said a Coordination Council of representatives of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula should be constituted to solve environment related problems. The president of the Sector Welfare Associations in Chandigarh, Air Marshal Randhir Singh (retd.) urged the Municipal Corporation to revive the sector level Committees consisting of officials and others for speedy disposal of problems and better community participation.
