Special courts to tackle environmental offences

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, June 4: Haryana has taken a lead by setting up "Special Environment Courts" at Faridabad, Hisar and Karnal to ensure speedy disposal of cases involving environmental offences.

In a message here on the eve of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Bansi Lal said an Environment Protection Council was functioning under the chairmanship of the Governor to discuss important matters relating to environment protection. All the related departments of the government were represented on the Council which laid guidelines for the different agencies, he said.

The state government had constituted district environment committees under the chairmanship of deputy commissioners to help spread environmental awareness at the grassroot level by undertaking activities like tree plantation, organising seminars, workshops and distributing pamphlets.

Haryana Governor Mahabir Prasad also urged the people of the state to extend their cooperation in keeping the environment clean for cumulative development of all species by adopting afforestation.

In his message, the Governor said that the state government had made concerted efforts in the direction of environment protection by imposing ban on the use of polythene bags and by launching "green campaign" through its Forest Department. The air we inhale was being polluted by the emission of carbon monoxide from vehicles, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur from industries, thermal power plants, dust from stone crushers and cement factories, depletion of ozone layer and by nuclear explosions, he added.

He said that the noise produced by vehicles, aeroplanes and trains, uncontrolled urbanisation, over-exploitation of natural resources and minerals were the cause of noise pollution. Apart from this, use of polythene bags, solid residue from industries, over use of chemical fertilizers, use of brackish or untreated sewage water for irrigation and use of radio active devices on earth also spread pollution, the Governor said.
